NIST Mobile ID Ad Hoc Work Group
Last updated September 18, 2008
Welcome to the NIST Mobile ID Ad Hoc Work Group. This group was created September 19, 2007,
- to develop guidelines for the capture, use, security, and transmission of mobile identification data and
- to produce a document to be published as a NIST Special Publication.
We will be working on recommendations to identify the best approach for improving interoperability between Mobile ID systems and
hopefully to develop a draft or straw-man document. This is an effort that shall address requirements ranging from enrollment to verification
to identification in almost every possible environment.
As the technology is continually redefining what is possible, our preliminary thinking is to develop a roadmap forward to improve
interoperability, biometric quality and accuracy rather then to develop a single standard.
This might take the form of a series of profiles for each biometric, much like the facial image profiles in the
ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2007 Standard. However, it is not the intention of this workgroup to harm existing systems by labeling them as non-standard.
Therefore, by defining a series of profiles we should be able to accommodate most existing systems while providing richer opportunities
for the next upgrade.
The Mobile ID Work Group is open to all interested parties. If you would like to join or have any questions, please email the Mobile
ID WG Chair Mike McCabe or the NIST contact Shahram Orandi at mobileid@nist.gov .
